General Ultrasound

Ultrasound scans utilise high-frequency sound waves (that cannot be heard by the human ear) to produce real-time images of structures within your body. It is generally better at depicting soft tissue rather than bones or air-filled structures (such as the lungs or intestines) inside the body.

Here are some examples of how ultrasound can be used:

  • Breast ultrasound – for screening purposes or to evaluate abnormalities seen on a mammogram.
  • Ultrasound of abdomen – to detect liver, gallbladder and kidney disorders.
  • Guiding a needle biopsy – for example for breast abnormalities.

When used for diagnostic purposes, ultrasound is very safe with no harmful effects.
